Microsoft's TRELLIS.2 transforms photos into printable models

Imagine taking a photo of an object and just sixty seconds later holding the finished 3D model in your hands – ready for the slicer. What sounds like science fiction has just become a reality with TRELLIS.2.

What is TRELLIS.2?

Microsoft Research has released a new open-source AI model (in collaboration with Tsinghua University) that makes the bridge between 2D and 3D narrower than ever before. Unlike previous attempts that often produced blurry surfaces, TRELLIS.2 uses a completely new technology calledO-Voxel.

The special thing about it: The AI understands not only the shape (geometry) but also the material properties such as roughness, metallic sheen, and even transparency.

Highlights for the community:

  • Speed:A high-resolution model is created on powerful hardware in about 60 seconds.

  • Precision:Even complex, thin structures or open surfaces that AI has previously struggled with are remarkably well recognized.

  • Open Source:Since the project is openly accessible, we can look forward to a quick integration into existing tools.

My conclusion

Even though there may still be small errors in extremely fine details that require a bit of post-processing, TRELLIS.2 is a huge leap forward. For prototyping or creating assets, it is a real powerhouse.

What do you think? Will this completely change the way we find and create models? Let me know in the comments!
